Yemi Alade Singer’s success is a direct result of the strength of her branding, not music

Yemi Alade Singer’s success is a direct result of the strength of her branding, not music

emi Alade is a great artiste, but her songs are not strong enough to stand alone and compete for the best prizes.

The 2016 Headies nominations are in, and Nigeria’s leading music lady, Yemi Alade comes through with what is relatively a paltry one nomination for the Artiste Of The Year.
That’s weird isn’t it?
Yemi Alade is currently regarded as one of Africa’s best female singers, and the MTV Africa Music Awards Best Female Artiste for two years in a row. But at home, where the Headies Awards represent the cream of her local industry, and the most consistent and highest yardstick for judging the performance of artistes, she falls short.

Yemi Alade has had a very busy 2016. She dropped her sophomore album, “Mama Africa”, which hit the No. 1 position at Africa’s iTunes charts, and proceeded to travel around the globe performing all of her singles, and gathering the wealth and the recognition. She has also moved past the project, and has focused her attention on releasing new music. Two post-album singles ‘Want you’ and ‘Gucci Ferragamo’, have come from her, with countless videos being released by her team.
On the continent, she receives lots of love, performing to sold-out venues, and collaborating with the best in different countries.

But here’s why she failed to justify her position at the Headies nomination list with just one nomination: Her success is not solely propped by the quality of her music. Yemi Alade’s ‘Mama Africa’ album has done more for her in terms of branding than provide actual artistic and concrete value.
Yemi Alade’s creative formula involves making music drawn from Ghanaian highlife, Ivorian dance music style coupé-décalé, as well as American hip-hop and pop, and passed through her Nigerian filter to give the final product.

That final product on many levels isn’t spectacular, but it is branded heavily and pumped full with very strong videos to back it up. That’s why they never chart as singles or make any major dent within the country. But the serve as live performance materials, and the video is distributed perfectly across all major channels to spread the brand Yemi Alade.
Yemi Alade’s success is a function of every element of her art and branding working in sync to provide a strong, relevant and culturally sensitive artiste. From the branding to the PR, to the visual supply of videos, and the provision of music, everything supports the other, to maintain her relevance and position.

But when they bare split, dissected and isolated from each other, they all come up short. That’s why the singles fail to make the categories for the Headies, but the singer, the sum of all the work and the product of every element working together is thrown into the Best Artiste category.
Yemi Alade is a great artiste, but her songs are not strong enough to stand alone and compete for the best prizes amongst the best.

Why Nigeria loves these musicians

Why Nigeria loves these musicians

What made Falz and Simi tick is love. Simi expresses a simplistic and innocent version of it, combining that with her good-girl pretty image. Falz is the eager, enthused man, searching for a bond which eludes him at every turn.

Does lightening ever strike twice? Does the heavens ever drop on our lap the same gift, from the same source, at the same time?
Simi and Falz are the perfect example of what music dovetailing ought to be. The duo, originally from different labels, and chasing the bright lights of stardom and music progression stumbled upon their chemistry with video of ‘Jamb Question’.
This was a Simi who was still searching for her spot in the industry, after the success of ‘Tiff’, and a Falz, whose comic brilliance on social media just began to get accepted as a thing. Two forces on the rise came together for different roles.

Simi supplied the singing, Falz, the acting, and like a grand orchestra, they clicked with such accuracy that people saw the future.
‘You guys should release more music’, a comment rang on Youtube. Another skipped professionalism and progressed into the realm of romance. “You guys need to date and make this video come through”.
What people saw in that video, the two musicians felt, although it was and still is limited to the studio. They would later make a remix of ‘Jamb Question’, where Falz did contribute to the melody with a rap verse.

Simmering the chemistry did, and many called for a bigger project to come from the union. Fans craved for something to mark time and serve as a tangible, collection which engraves this musical bond into the stones of pop culture. Such was its potency and relativity.

Their hide-and-seek made many a person lovesick, as it struck a fundamental nerve within Nigerians. Love is a beautiful feeling, and the search for it, in its truest and pristine form, reverberates all through humanity. Relativity, personalization, correlation and causation, all came into play, and Nigerians clamored for more that screen-drug. They were hooked from the start.

Falz’s sophomore album, “Stories That Touch” came rolling through last year, and although tracks like ‘Karashika’ got a head-start, listeners of the project new that the most complete meal on the tracklist was ‘Soldier’ by Simi.
The two performers reprised their earlier roles, although Falz switched from clumsy Cabbie to authoritative military officer, who combines wooing, with tactical bullying. Simi was a sharp-tongued wench with a curse on her lips. The video sealed the deal.

The duo have recently had to deal with rumours from the press, which claim that the music birds have taken their collaboration a step further and become lovers, with screen-love translating into real-love. On every corner they have been hounded with questions from reporters, sniffing for the scoop of their love life.
“Falz is my friend and that is it. In another world, you can interview me, and I will give you an answer. But in this world, cut”, Simi told HipTV. In his recent interview with NdaniTV’s Dorcas Shola Fapson on The Juice, Falz revealed that Simi has a boyfriend but he isn’t the one.

While many are openly disappointed that romance isn’t on the cards, Falz and Simi’s combination still has a lot more in store. The duo have been recording together, and have released a joint EP. The project is titled “Chemistry”, and features seven new songs.
Their match on screen was made in heaven…music heaven, and we are enjoying it.

The “Chemistry” EP would serve as a precursor to her sophomore album expected to drop later in the year 2016.

Falz and Simi have released their joint project "Chemistry"EP.

The project which has been teased with numerous photos has finally been unveiled.

The pair have both worked on Simi’s ‘Jamb question’ and Falz’s ‘Soldier’ featuring Simi which was a spin-off to ‘Jamb question’. These songs which were well received formed the inspiration for this project.
Falz and I do have great chemistry, it is music chemistry, we get along great, we are actually really close friends, so I guess it also helps when we make music”. the singer told Pulse in an interview.

Simi has released an initial EP, “Restless”, which consists of covers of foreign songs such as Beyonce’s ‘Halo’, Adele’s ‘Set fire to the rain’ and Drake’s ‘Marvin’s Room’ among others, where she changed the lyrics and stories of the songs to introduce her style of music, and released it as an independent project before joining X3M music.
The singer’s “Restless” EP helped get her signed to X3M music when the CEO of the label got hold of her cover of Drake’s ‘Marvin’s room’.

The vocalist on signing to X3M music broke out with a love single titled ‘Tiff’ in 2014 and she has since released other singles which has steadily gained her wider acceptance and recognition as a gifted singer and artiste.
The “Chemistry” EP serves as a precursor to her sophomore album which she said should drop this year 2016.
The album would follow her debut gospel album “Ogaju”, produced by Samklef which houses the popular song ‘Ara ile’.
